Mottahedeh entitled "Pluralism in Non-Western Traditions: the Case of Islam". The lecture takes place at 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, September 22 in the Bell Theatre of the Minto Centre Building. Dr. Mottahedeh is the Gurney Professor of History at Harvard University and the Chair of the Committee on Islamic Studies at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard. He completed his studies at Harvard and Cambridge universities before joining the faculty at Harvard. His research focuses on pre-modern social and intellectual history of the Muslim Middle East, and he has received numerous academic awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a MacArthur Prize Fellowship, a Foreign Policy Association Fellowship, an American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellowship, the Harvard Detur Prize, and the Shaw Harvard Traveling Fellowship. Among his publications are Lessons in Islamic Jurisprudence, The Mantle of the Prophet: Religion and Politics in Iran, and Loyalty and Leadership in Early Islamic Society.
