Humanities Week to focus on contribution of the arts

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO, SEPTEMBER 14, 2005) – The University of Windsor’s Humanities Research Group will open its doors to the public in celebration of Humanities Week, September 19 to the 23.

Highlights of the week include a free public lecture by novelist, playwright, poet, and former University of Windsor Professor Joyce Carol Oates, Monday, September 19, 7:30 p.m. in Assumption University Chapel, and a free public lecture by celebrated Canadian pianist, social justice and peace activist Anton Kuerti on the subject, When Art and Politics Collide, Thursday, September 22, 7:30 p.m. in Assumption University Chapel. Humanities Week will conclude with a piano recital by Kuerti featuring the works of Mendelssohn, Brahms and Schubert at 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 23 in Assumption University Chapel.

Tuesday, September 20
• 7:30 p.m. - Philosophers Cafe, hosted by Philosophy Professor Jeff Noonan
Upstairs, Patrick O’Ryan’s Irish Pub, 25 Pitt St. E.
Wednesday, September 21
• Noon - Is the Book Dead? Panel discussion with History Professor Leslie Howsam, English Professor Stephen Pender and Art Rhyno of Leddy Library
Leddy Library.
Thursday, September 22

• 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - Master class with pianist Anton Kuerti
Assumption University Chapel

Friday, September 23

• Noon - “Literary Quickie” readings by poets, critics and editors Anne Walker and Louis Cabri.
