The University of Calgary’s Fitness Centre in the Kinesiology complex is hosting a Grand Reopening today, September 14, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm to celebrate its recent expansion and renovation makeover. Media are invited to drop by (or better yet, put on gym clothes and take part in the event) to view the new facilities and equipment, take part in day pass giveaways, and learn more about Fitness Centre program offerings. Private tours will be arranged on request. The expansion, which started mid-May and was completed early September, increased the main floor from 7,000 square feet to 10,500 square feet. As well, an additional 1,300 square feet of space was added to the second floor. Some of the expansion’s features include a cardio theatre area, a 1,200 square foot stretch and floor exercise area, new flooring, new automated access system and a new fitness studio. To complement the expansion, new equipment, new programs, and new membership benefits have also been introduced. “We’re thrilled that the expansion was completed prior to the students returning,” says Mark Eckert, Associate Director, Campus Recreation. “For years now students have told us they need more room, more equipment and more services. This expansion and redesign is in direct response to their needs and wants. More room accommodates more students. More equipment eliminates line-ups. And more services give students a greater variety of choices. It’s all about offering more!” Primary used by University of Calgary students, the Fitness Centre is also open to university staff, faculty, alumni and the public. Annual membership rates start as low as $420 per person ($680 per family).
