Proposals sought for lab building art installation
Proposals are being accepted for a commission to create a work of art which will be woven into the design of the laboratory building now under construction on the University of Regina campus. The commission will provide up to $14,000 to cover the artist’s creative process and time needed to complete the work.

The $32 million, five-storey lab building addition will house some of the best and most modern research and teaching facilities in the country, providing state-of-the-art laboratory space for faculty and students. With room for 30 principle investigators, each with a team of four to five post-doctoral researchers and graduate student researchers, the addition is expected to be completed in May, 2007.

“Good science and good art are both manifestations of the creative human spirit,” said U of R president Robert Hawkins. “The art which is woven into the beautiful new buildings on our campus inspires learning and enriches the quality of life of all who work and study here.”

Incorporating art as part of building design began at the U of R in 1996, when works of art were commissioned for the Dr. William Riddell Building. The practice continued in 2004 with the commissioning of works for the Centre for Kinesiology and Sport and the new residence complex.

Works proposed for the lab building must incorporate the art as a permanent part of the fabric of the building. Proposals might include friezes, wall or floor designs, railings or steel work, projection, sound installations, glass work or lighting.

The deadline for submission of proposals for the juried selection process is Oct. 28, 2005. A maximum of three proposals will be short listed and announced by November 4. The short listed artists will work with the construction manager and architect to develop detailed proposals by December 2. The successful submission will be chosen and announced by December 9.

For further information about the competition, and complete directions on how to submit a proposal, contact Carol Reyda at 337-2347, or by email at carol.reyda@uregina.ca.
