The National Scholar Award is awarded to CCAA athletes for outstanding academic accomplishment. To qualify, athletes must achieve a GPA standing of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent in their current academic year. From the 100 member-institutions in the CCAA, 478 students were recognized for their pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.

UNB Saint John recipients were as follows: Anita Punamiya (Badminton), James Giacomantonio (Badminton), Jenna Bowen (Soccer), Cassie Comeau (Soccer), Kate Hamiltion (Soccer), Shelley Holland (Soccer), Allison Richard (Soccer), Okechukwu Ikejiani (Soccer), Allison Malone (Volleyball), Curtis Blagden (Volleyball), Tim Edgell, (Volleyball).

“These 11 student athletes have shown great mental discipline and focus both in the classroom and on the field or court,” said UNB Saint John Athletics Director Monique Allain. “As Athletics Director I am very proud of their accomplishments and hope they will serve as an example to others that a balance can be maintained between physical fitness and mental sharpness.”

“This is great news and a great way to start a new season for the Seawolves,” said Dr. Kathryn Hamer, Vice-President (UNB Saint John). “That these students were able to maintain a high academic standing while competing in league play and providing community service through activities like the Howl with the Wolves program makes their achievement seem doubly impressive.”

The CCAA is the national governing body for college sport in Canada, providing high-level competition through intercollegiate sport that recognizes excellence in academics and athletics. The UNB Saint John Seawolves have been part of the CCAA since 1994.
