As September is Arthritis Awareness Month, the following arthritis-related research being conducted at Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry may be OF INTEREST.
NEW EMERGING TEAM IN OSTEOARTHRITIS The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry now has a New Emerging Team in Osteoarthritis. This is a multidisciplinary group investigating the prevention, detection and management of osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis. In particular the group is trying to better understand the pain associated with OA and whether that pain actually contributes to the progression of the disease. The Canadian Arthritis Network and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) have funded six of these New Emerging Teams across the country to investigate arthritis from various viewpoints. STUDYING SCLERODERMA Another member of the CIHR Group in Skeletal Development & Remodeling, Dr. Andrew Leask is gaining new insight into Scleroderma and in particular, how it affects lung function. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease which causes hardening of the tissue. It's most recognizable when skin changes and becomes taut in the face and fingers, but it can also be fatal if internal organs are affected. CAMERA, LIGHTS, ACTION... Researchers from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western are featured in a new DVD just released by the Arthritis Society. The video takes us inside laboratories to see some of the exciting research projects being funded by donations to the Arthritis Society, such Dr. Frank Beier's investigation into the growth and destruction of cartilage.
