September 18, 2006 Source: : http://www.media.uottawa.ca/mediaroom/news_details-e.php?nid=966 Eminent uOttawa historian Chad Gaffield chosen to lead Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada OTTAWA, September 18, 2006 — The University of Ottawa is proud to share in the news that Dr. Chad Gaffield, University Research Chair and esteemed historian, has been chosen as the new President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). Maxime Bernier, Federal Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the SSHRC, made the announcement earlier today. "With his wealth of experience and knowledge, I am pleased to welcome Dr. Gaffield as President of SSHRC," said Minister Bernier. "I am confident that his leadership and contributions to the social sciences and humanities will enable Canada to remain competitive in university-based research." "The University of Ottawa community has been exceptionally fortunate to be able to benefit from Dr. Gaffield’s experience and knowledge for many years," said uOttawa President Gilles Patry. "Our loss is an important gain for the research community and Canadian society." Dr. Gaffield launched the Institute of Canadian Studies at the University of Ottawa and served as the founding Director from 1997 to 2003. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is an independent federal government agency that funds university-based research and graduate training through national peer-review competitions.
