OTTAWA, September 19, 2005 — Here is a summary of the activities taking place at the University of Ottawa this week.

September 20

Announcement of the Fulbright Research Chair

8 a.m., Arts Hall, room 509 (70 Laurier Avenue, Ottawa)

The University of Ottawa and the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States of America announce the establishment of a Fulbright Visiting Chair at the University of Ottawa. Specifically, the Chair will focus on research pertaining to contemporary public policy, governance and public administration.

Opening of COOL research lab in social statistics

10:30 a.m., Morisset Hall, room 322 (65 University Private, Ottawa)

Official opening of the COOL Research Data Centre (RDC) in the Morisset Library. This secure data centre allows researchers to have access to Statistics Canada’s master files that can provide insight on important issues facing Canadians.

The Honourable Claire L’Heureux-Dubé to speak at launch of 2005 Pro Bono Students Canada program

4 p.m., Fauteux Hall, room 147 (57 Louis-Pasteur Street, Ottawa)

The launch of the 2005 Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) program and the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa welcomes the Honourable Claire L’Heureux-Dubé, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Mme L’Heureux-Dubé will speak at the opening event for the 2005 PBSC program.

The Institute of the Environment present Sheila Watt-Cloutier

The Institute of the Environment receives the chair from the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, Sheila Watt-Cloutier. Mrs. Watt-Cloutier will speak about « The Artic, its people and climate change ».

September 22

Seminar from the series “Looking and planning beyond Kyoto”

11: 45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Hagen Hall, room 305 (115 Séraphin-Marion Street, Ottawa)

The Institute of the Environment presents a brown bag lunch moderated by Charles Caccia, former federal Environment Minister (1983-1984) and Chair of the House of Commons Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development, and Philippe Crabbé, Professor Emeritus, Department of Economics and member of the Intergovernmental Expert Group on Climate Change.

September 23 and 24

Educating for Peace, Global Citizenship and Democracy: Research and Curriculum

The Faculty of Education will be the host of a conference focused on practical and diverse ideas for peace, global awareness and democracy for teachers at all levels. Keynote speaker: Alexa McDonough, MP.

September 25

Opening of the Tsampalieros Atrium

11 a.m., Fauteux Hall, Tsampalieros Atrium, 3rd floor (57 Louis-Pasteur Street, Ottawa)

The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law will celebrate a significant donation from one of its graduates, Gabriel Tsampalieros, President and CEO of Cara Operations. Thanks to Mr. Tsampalieros’ generosity, students in Fauteux Hall are enjoying the beautifully renovated student lounge, now called the Tsampalieros Atrium.
