September 19, 2006 Source: : http://www.news.utoronto.ca/bin6/060919-2574.asp Papua New Guinea honours Rotman professor David Beatty is country’s honorary consul Sep 19/06 by Ken McGuffin David Beatty, a professor at the Rotman School of Management, has been awarded a 30th Independence Anniversary Medal in recognition of his continuing services to the nation of Papua New Guinea. He was presented with the award on Sept. 18 by Sir Michael Thomas Somare, prime minister of Papua New Guinea, during a ceremony held at the United Nations in New York City, marking the independence of Papua New Guinea. From 1973 to 1977, Beatty served as director of the central planning office and economic adviser to the prime minister in Papua New Guinea during the transition of the country from colonial status to self government and Independence. He currently serves as the honorary consul to Canada for the Government of Papua New Guinea. It was Beatty’s third honour for his work with the government of Papua New Guinea as he is also the recipient of an Independence Medal in 1974 and was made an officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London, U.K. , in 1993. Beatty has taught corporate strategy in the Rotman School’s executive and MBA programs for the last decade and is the Conway Director of the Rotman School’s Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics and Board Effectiveness. At the start of his prestigious career he was active in the developing world, working in Tanzania in the central planning office and, following a stint at McKinsey, in Papua New Guinea. He is the former president of Weston Foods and a founding chair of Orogen Mineral Resources. He is an experienced corporate director serving with the boards of companies in Canada, Australia, Mexico and the United Kingdom. His current directorships include Bank of Montreal, where he chairs the risk review committee, FirstService Corporation, Goldcorp, Husky Injection Molding and Inmet Mining, where serves as lead director. He spent a decade as a member of the board of directors of Peter Drucker's Foundation in California and served as vice-chairman. Currently, Beatty serves as the managing director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. He was named a fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2005.
