September 19, 2006 Source: : http://www.mta.ca/news/?id=1098 Teaching Excellence — Dean style, Sept. 21 SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison’s dean of social sciences, Dr. Rob Summerby-Murray was recognized as a 3M Teaching Fellow this past June at the national conference for the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE). In honour of this award the department of geography, the environmental studies program, the Purdy Crawford Teaching Centre, and the Geography and Environmental Studies Student Society will be hosting an afternoon event entitled, "A Celebration of Teaching Excellence: Robert Summerby-Murray 3M Teaching Fellowship." The event will take place Thursday, September 21, in the Avard-Dixon building, room G10 from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Scheduled talks include: "Looking Back…Looking Forward" by Dr. Peter Ennals; "Field Experience: Getting out of AVDX (Avard Dixon)" with Dr. Tim Reffienstein; "Changes and Challenges in the Student Experience: Emerging Trends in the Department" with Mount Allison student Jenn Heckman; and "The Impact of a Geographer — Graduate Studies and Internationalization" with PhD candidate Anne Semple from the University of New South Wales. Dr. Rob Summerby-Murray will conclude with the keynote address entitled, "The Nature of Discovery: collaborative learning and the education of a geographer." Everyone is welcome to attend. Dr. Summerby-Murray is currently dean of social sciences at Mount Allison and secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Council of Deans of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He has taught at Mount Allison since 1992 and is the third Mount Allison faculty member to be awarded a 3M Teaching Fellowship, joining Alex Fancy (modern languages and literatures and drama) and Bob Hawkes (physics). In 2000, Dr. Summerby-Murray was awarded Mount Allison’s Tucker Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Association of Atlantic Universities’ (AAU) Distinguished Teacher Award. In 2003, he was awarded a Paul Paré Award for Excellence in Teaching and Research at Mount Allison. —30— About the 3M Teaching Fellowship Awards In 1986 3M Canada Company joined STLHE to co-sponsor the 3M Teaching Fellowships. Up to 10 Fellowships are presented each year to recognize both teaching excellence and educational leadership. Today, 3M Teaching Fellows throughout Canada represent a broad range of disciplines and work collaboratively to enhance teaching and learning at their own institutions and through larger initiatives supported by the Society. They also work collectively through the Council of 3M Teaching Fellows advocating policies and initiatives to enhance teaching and learning in Canadian Universities.
