Three Writers to Read at UNBF

September 19, 2006
UNB Fredericton News Release: D710
Tina English, Student Recruitment and Integrated Marketing (506) 453-4793

Wayne Johnston, author of the classic The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, will read from his newest novel, The Custodian of Paradise on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall on the University of New Brunswick Fredericton campus.

Johnston holds an MA in creative writing and an honorary doctorate from UNB. The Custodian of Paradise was recently placed on a list of 15 for the Giller Prize. The novel’s historical narrative based in Newfoundland and Labrador continues where The Colony of Unrequited Dreams left off.

Also joining Mr. Johnston will be poets Karen Solie and David Seymour. Ms. Solie is UNB’s current writer-in-residence. Her first book of poetry, Short Haul Engine, was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize. She will read from that collection as well as from her new book, Modern and Normal. The brilliant new book is a work of "a seasoned, established poet at the top of her game" (Globe & Mail).

David Seymour is another graduate of UNB’s master of arts creative writing program. He will read from his acclaimed debut collection, Inter Alia. He is considered one of Canada’s most talented young poets and was selected by Lorna Crozier and Patrick Lane for Breathing Fire 2: Canada’s New Poets.

The reading is sponsored by UNBF’s department of English, the University Bookstore, the New Brunswick Arts Board, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

For more information on the reading, contact Ross Leckie at 458-7395.
