UW homecoming offers full day of events, from Amazing Race to Stephen Lewis lecture

WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006) -- The University of Waterloo is adding a number of public events to its annual homecoming celebrations and inviting members of the surrounding community to enjoy a fun-filled and informative day of activities.

Most of this year's homecoming events will take place at various locations around campus on Saturday, Sept. 30. They include a scavenger hunt for children, barbecue and children's activities for the family, a Pounce de Lion colouring contest and a special appearance by Blue from the children's program Blue's Clues.

Saturday evening features a keynote lecture by Stephen Lewis, United Nations special envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa. He will discuss global issues, their impact, and the role of education and human rights in changing how we deal with the world.

"This year, we've put a special effort into opening up our program to more than just the thousands of alumni, students, staff and faculty who show tremendous support year after year," said Jason Coolman, director of alumni affairs. "We're excited by the opportunity to host families from the surrounding community and very much looking forward to having Stephen Lewis share some of his amazing experiences."

Members of the community are encouraged to stop by homecoming headquarters in the student life centre to pick up a homecoming passport. It includes a campus map highlighting the locations of all events and information on events and food options. Participants who collect stamps from ten or more events can enter a draw to win an iPod.

The faculty of environmental studies is hosting an Amazing Race fun challenge at 9:30 a.m. in front of the environmental studies 1 building.

The Impact UW Expo, billed as Canada's largest student-run entrepreneurship event, runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the William G. Davis Computer Research Centre. Several of UW's more successful alumnus-turned-entrepreneur -- all members of the Globe and Mail's Top 40 Under 40 list -- will share user-proven success stories, encourage new ideas and help students establish personal contacts.

A scavenger hunt will begin at 11 a.m. in the Peter Russell Rock Garden.

The East Asian Festival family and culture day will feature art, music, flavours and festivities from that part of the world between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Renison College.

The homecoming barbecue and children's activities will begin at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

A colouring contest, featuring UW mascot Pounce de Lion, closes at 1:30 p.m. Details of the contest, including rules and eligibility requirements, are available at link

The Earth Sciences Museum in the Centre for Environmental Information Technology will open its dinosaur exhibition from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Entire families, and children in particular, can meet and greet -- as well as sing along with Blue from Blue's Clues -- at a new event organized by the faculty of arts. He'll appear in the modern languages building at 2 p.m.

The Waterloo Warriors football team will face their cross-town rivals, the Laurier Golden Hawks, at university stadium at 2 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for students and seniors, and free for children 12 and under.

Homecoming's 2006 speaker, Stephen Lewis, will deliver his lecture at 7 p.m. in the humanities theatre in J.G. Hagey Hall. Admission to the lecture is $15 and there are still a few tickets remaining.

Lewis' long service as a politician, broadcaster and diplomat earned him a place as a Companion of the Order of Canada. He also joined the Dalai Lama, Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Nelson Mandela on Time magazine's list of 100 most influential people in the world.

A complete list of events is available from UW's homecoming website at link Except where otherwise indicated, all events are free. Some events have a maximum capacity and visitors are encouraged to register for tickets on the website.
