World-class jazz musicians to highlight first-of-its-kind jazz festival

ANTIGONISH, NS --- The best of the best from the jazz world will perform at Jazz X-Fest hosted by the St. Francis Xavier University Music Department. Venues on the StFX campus and throughout the Town of Antigonish will showcase Juno Award winning jazz musicians.

Jazz X-Fest will kick off at Piper's Pub on Friday, Sept. 23 at 8 pm and will run until Monday, Sept. 26. Organizers are expecting to draw jazz lovers from across the province to this unique and first-of-its-kind event. Afternoon events will take place at Whidden's Campground and evening events will be held at Piper's Pub and the Orient Lounge.

There will be an award winning line-up of musicians consisting of Philadelphia-based guitarist Jimmy Bruno and jazz drummer Jerry Granelli. Mike Murley will be performing with his own quartet and the Juno Award winning band David Braid Sextet will also heat up the stage. Jazz X-Fest will also offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to see retired world-famous jazz musician Oliver Jones. A concert by Jones will be held Sunday, Sept. 25 at 8 pm in Nicholson Hall on the StFX campus.

For aspiring musicians, there will be late night jam sessions at the Orient Lounge, along with clinics and student presentations starting Saturday and Sunday at 10 am at Whidden's campground.

Also new to the line-up is the Jazz X-Fest 'Afterglow' party featuring Jimmy Bruno. The afterglow party will be held 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm on Monday, Sept. 26 at the Alcove, located downtown Antigonish. Legendary jazz guitarist Jimmy Bruno will perform with trombonist Gene Smith and bassist Skip Beckwith in a very intimate setting. The $20 admission fee includes hors-d'oeuvres.

All proceeds raised will benefit the StFX Music Department. For more information visit www.jazzxfest.com.
