A Journey Over the River Styx — opens at the Owens, Sept. 22

SACKVILLE, NB — The Owens Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition, A Journey Over the River Styx, a career retrospective of the work of New Brunswick artist Rebecca Burke. Burke, who graduated with a master’s of fine arts from Ohio State University, has taught painting, drawing, and seminar courses in contemporary art issues in the department of fine arts at Mount Allison University since 1980. An opening reception will be held Friday, September 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. with remarks by Sackville artist Linda Rae Dornan.

A metaphor for our one-way journey to the nether world, A Journey Over the River Styx covers over 25 years of painting centered on a number of issues, from the role of women in society, the fragility of our environment and our ecosystems, to the loss of habitat and species as a result of human activity. Burke’s current work is focused on an abstract or industrial landscape on to which a figurative image, usually an animal, is stenciled or painted. In these works Burke is concerned with both the expressive potential of the paint and the evocative potential of the images and how they interact with the abstract or landscape based ground.

Rebecca Burke’s work will be on view at the Owens Art Gallery from September 22 to October 29. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue of the artist’s work written by Dr. Carol Williams. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue were produced with the support of the Canada Council of Arts and through the Province of New Brunswick Arts Board.
