"At Mount Allison Our Best Times are Not Wasted" is a campus-wide initiative designed to facilitate non- and low-alcohol events for students and community members. Kris Trotter, a personal counsellor at Mount Allison, is one of the main organizers behind the program. She says, "The new program will allow students to apply for ‘mini’ grants to organize non-drinking events for the entire community. Anyone can submit an idea for funding and we’re encouraging communication through the program’s new web site." Students, either as individuals or groups, can apply for funding to host "Best Times" non-alcohol events through the program. A committee will review the proposals, and grants will be available each month for a different activity. The Tantramarsh Pub has also put their support behind the program. During the school year, the Pub will be open the third Thursday of every month as a non-drinking establishment to allow those students under 19 and the many Mount Allison students who want to dance and socialize without alcohol a chance to use the facility. The Pub will also host "Best Times" sponsored events throughout the year. The "Best Times" event for September will take place on Thursday, September 21 in the Pub from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. The "Best Times Non-Alcohol Dance Party!" is open to all Mount Allison students with drink specials on mocktails, pop, and juice throughout the night. Residence monitors and Pub members get in free while cover is just $2 for others. Come out to celebrate the new academic year with door prizes, music, dancing, and cake. "Our Best Times are Not Wasted" will also be launching an interactive web site (www.mta.ca/timenotwasted), which will list all non-drinking events on campus and allow for students to voice their thoughts on the program and issues surrounding drinking, through this forum. —30—
