The Canadian Plains Research Center (CPRC) at the University of Regina is pleased to announce that Arab Cooking on a Saskatchewan Homestead: Recipes and Recollections, written by Habeeb Salloum and designed by Donna Achtzehner at the CPRC Press, won the Silver Medal in the Canadian Food Culture Category at the prestigious Canadian Culinary Book Awards. The award was presented at a gala dinner on Sept. 16 at the Delta Hotel in Winnipeg. "I never thought in my youthful years when I saw the dust storms build up on the prairie horizon or when I inspected my weasel trap line in the -30 below weather or when my mother created out of virtually nothing gourmet dinners, that I would one day be honoured for writing about these memorable days," said Salloum. "However, this is Canada, a land built by a multitude of peoples, including its historic native peoples who have trod this land for thousands of years. This nation of ours always honours its offspring who contribute something to its history." The book is a unique blend of recipes and insights into the culture of the Arab-Canadian community in Saskatchewan. It can be purchased at the University of Regina Bookstore and other bookstores across Canada. A Canadian author who grew up in Saskatchewan, Salloum joined the RCAF during the Second World War and then worked for the Canadian Department of National Revenue for 36 years. For the last 21 years, he has been a full-time freelance writer and author, writing five books, 18 chapters in books, and hundreds of articles about food, travel, history, and homesteading in Western Canada. His writing has appeared in such publications as the Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail, the Western Producer, Contemporary Review, Vegetarian Journal, Saveur, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Christian Science Monitor.
