September 20, 2006 Source: : http://www.smu.ca/newsreleases/2006/09-20-2006.html "Research at SMU has a big bang for its buck," says Dean Saint Mary’s University is a leader when it comes to faculty published in major academic journals, according to the Canadian University Publications (CUP). In its Special Report on Canada’s Top Universities Publication Rankings by Subfield, the University shines in a number of categories. In the Natural Sciences and Engineering Category, Chemistry ranked seventh overall, while Physics came in sixth place. In the Social Sciences Category, Economics came in eighth, and Sociology was ranked seventh overall. For the University, these results are particularly exciting because aside from being among the top ranked universities for number of publications in so many disciplines, Saint Mary’s was also ranked second in the country on Publication Effectiveness. "The results reported by CUP is exciting news for Saint Mary’s as it shows how successful our faculty is in getting their research published," says Dr. Kevin Vessey, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research at the University. "This means that our professors’ publications have an extremely high level of impact relative to the amount of money spent to fund the research. In other words, our research has a big bang for its buck," he adds. CUP measured the publication rate among Canada’s universities from 1999 to 2004, and only reported those institutions that ranked in the top 10. Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both in Canada and around the world. Saint Mary's, founded in 1802, is home to one of Canada's leading business schools, a Science Faculty widely known for its cutting-edge research, a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty and a vibrant Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. -30- For More Information: Paul Fitzgerald Public Affairs Officer Saint Mary's University, Public Affairs (902) 420.5514 E-mail: paul.fitzgerald@smu.ca www.smu.ca
