September 21, 2005 Source: Laurentian University of Sudbury: http://www.laurentian.ca/?file=newsrelease/2005/sept/sept21_rpound_e.php Richard Pound to receive an honorary doctorate from Laurentian University Laurentian University will award an Honorary Doctorate of Sports Administration to Mr. Richard Pound at its Fall Convocation Ceremony to be held on Saturday, October 29, at 2 p.m., in Laurentian's Fraser Auditorium. A swimming finalist in the 1960 Olympiad and a gold medal winner at the 1962 Commonwealth Games, Mr. Pound has acquired a far-ranging reputation for his work in sports administration in Canada and abroad. Secretary General and then President of the Canadian Olympic Association, Mr. Pound has been a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1978, serving as Vice-President from 1987-1991 and 1996-2000. Through his involvement and contributions, he is acknowledged to be not only the most influential Canadian within the Olympic movement but also one of the most powerful persons in the IOC hierarchy. This Canadian-born lawyer and chancellor of McGill University has accomplished a great deal during his lengthy involvement in the IOC. He was called upon in times of trouble to solve the IOC's financial and ethical problems. Mr. Pound created The Olympic Program (TOP), a sponsorship program that creates more reliable sources of income for the Olympic movement, and negotiated profitable TV-rights deals. His relentless pursuit of the truth has done much to restore the integrity of the Olympic Games. Since 1999, has held the position of Chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In this position, he is working to develop an international system of doping control for athletes. Richard Pound is the author of the six following books: Five Rings Over Korea: the Secret Negotiations Behind the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul; Chief Justice W.R. Jackett: By the Law of the Land; Strikerman Elliott: The First Fifty Years; Inside the Olympics; High Impact Quotations ; and Canadian Facts and Dates. In 2003 he delivered the Falconbridge Lecture at the University. Mr. Pound has also been a guest speaker at a number of Sports Administration classes at Laurentian, and been a valued resource person for faculty and student projects. “We are delighted to be honouring such as distinguished Canadian and to be welcoming him back to Laurentian,” said Dr. Judith Woodsworth, President of Laurentian University.
