The conference starts at 10:00 a.m. and goes to 4:00 p.m. This is an annual event that is run by the Brandon University Politics Club and Minot University History Club. The conference welcomes all students. Admission is free and transportation is provided. Several students from both Universities will present papers this years topic of Global Security, and all those who attend will be invited into the panel-like discussion, ensuring that the focus of the topic is thus viewed through differing perspectives as presented through several papers. The Peace Gardens Conference is one of Brandon University’s longest standing traditions. For the students and the faculty representatives that accompany them, the experience offers unique insights into just how similar and different two countries can be on the same issue, considering how closely they are geographically situated. To better understand the effects of Global Security, Brandon University Professor Meir Serfaty had this to say: "The expectation that globalization would achieve global security through economic and technological development in the post-Cold War era has either not materialized for many or has been rejected outright by others. International terrorism, a force fomented by the failure of globalization, threatens the viability of traditional Western nation-states. On the other hand, interventionism by the Western powers to deal with this threat has proven unsatisfactory. In other words, the old rules of conduct among states no longer reflect the current geopolitical reality. Our survival may depend on our ability to acknowledge the new world paradigm fully and proceed to develop appropriate strategies to achieve global security" This is a rare opportunity for politically minded people to have such a forum for discussion and debate. This exchange of information, along with the opinion of various issues that are facing today’s world, is valuable. It is a worthwhile way to learn about the perspectives of events seen by our neighbor to the south.
