Science Seminar Series presents BU Environmental Science Coordinator Dr. David Greenwood

BRANDON, MB - On Tuesday, September 26th from 12:40 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Brandon University Science Seminar series will present a talk by Dr. David Greenwood (Environmental Science Coordinator, Brandon University) titled Climate change: the science and implications for life in Canada. Dr. Greenwood’s talk will take place in room 3-42 of the Brodie Sciences Building and is free of charge. All are welcome!

"Most Canadians are interested in the weather," says Dr. Greenwood, "Is it going to be sunny or rainy? Will I have to dig out from underneath 2 metres of snow to get to work? We're also concerned about what the future will bring; will next year be hotter or wetter/drier than last year? 2005 was the hottest year on record, and most of the last 14 years have been close to that record, with 1998 the 2nd hottest year on record (or the hottest, depending on whose statistics you believe). Last winter was the warmest on record for the Prairies, and the summer just past was the warmest on record for Canada, and a near-record breaker for Brandon and Winnipeg. Parts of the Canadian Arctic were 2-5 degrees warmer this past winter and summer than normal. Plants and animals are already changing their seasonal behaviour and some species are being seen further north than ever before."

"We live in a country that is already seeing the effects of climate change," he continues, "but there are nay-sayers, or 'deniers' who say that climate isn't changing, or that that any changes that are occurring are part of natural cycles. In this talk I will outline the science behind climate change analysis, and describe the record of climate that is used to advance the arguments that human actions are the root cause of current climate change. I will also speak about what changes we are seeing now and their implications, and what we might expect in our own lifetimes and in our children's lifetimes. The talk is not intended as a cautionary tale. It is intended to inform its audience about the facts. "

All presentations in the Brandon University Science Seminar Series are free of charge and open to all.
