September 22, 2006 Source: : http://www.mta.ca/news/?id=1102 Gifted pianist prepares for Atlantic Young Artist Tour — Sept. 28 in Sackville SACKVILLE, NB — Twenty-two year old pianist Philip Roberts will be featured in a performance in Brunton Auditorium at the Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music, Mount Allison University, on Thursday, September 28 at 8 p.m. Philip is the winner of the 2006 Atlantic Young Artist Competition, hosted by the music department of Mount Allison University in May. Between September 22 and October 1, he will tour the Atlantic region, with recitals in Halifax, Yarmouth, Wolfville, Charlottetown, Sackville, Greater Moncton, and St. John’s. The Young Artist Competition and Concert Tour are projects of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Associations and its provincial counterparts, the Registered Music Teachers' Associations of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Throughout his tour, Philip will present a varied program of music for solo piano. Works will include Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major (J.S. Bach), Sonata in F Minor, Op. 2, No. 1 (Beethoven), Three Preludes for Piano (Gershwin), the Prelude from Eight Concert Etudes, Op. 40 (Kapustin), Novelette (Beckwith), Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52 (Chopin), and Islamey (Balakirev). Philip Roberts holds an honours bachelor of music degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a master’s of music degree in piano performance from l’Université de Montréal, as well as an ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His past principal teachers include Sheena Roberts and Timothy Steeves. He recently began his doctoral studies in piano performance with Marc Durand at l’Université de Montréal. Philip is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including first place in the Canadian Music Competitions national finals, the Junior Rose Bowl at the St John’s Kiwanis Music Festival, the Debut Atlantic-RBC Award for Musical Excellence, and the International Gold Medal at the 56th annual Llangolen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales. He has been recorded regularly by the CBC in solo recitals and stage shows, and as part of the Up and Coming series hosted by Jon Kimura Parker. Philip has performed as a soloist with a variety of ensembles, including the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra, the MUN Jazz Orchestra, the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, and the Banff Centre String Orchestra. An avid composer, he was twice winner of the MUN School of Music Carol Composition Contest, and in 2004 was awarded first place in the Open Category of the CFMTA Music Writing Competition.
