September 22, 2006 Source: : http://dailynews.mcmaster.ca/story.cfm?id=4237 Museum of Art to host panel discussion The McMaster Museum of Art will host a panel discussion on The Life and Death of Identity Politics in Canadian Art on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. The discussion will be moderated by Andrea Fatona and will feature several artists, including Buseje Bailey, Brendan Fernandes, Shelley Niro and Ho Tam. # Andrea Fatona is a curator and writer who resides in Peterborough, Ont. Her work examines issues of race, marginal histories and post-coloniality. She is interested in de-reifying the gallery space and transforming it into a site in which individuals can communicate across knowledge boundaries. Fatona is a contributing editor to FUSE magazine based in Toronto. She is a doctoral candidate in the department of Sociology and Equity Studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Her area of specialization is in Culture, Communication and Critical Education # Buseje Bailey holds a BFA from York University and an MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and design. Her work has been shown at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S. (1992), and Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. (1991). Bailey currently teaches at the Ontario College of Art and Design. # Brendan Fernandes holds a BFA from York University and an MFA from the University of Western Ontario. In the upcoming year, the artist will have solo shows at SKOL gallery in Montreal and at Artspace in Peterborough (2007) Beginning in September 2006, Fernandes will participate in an artist's residency at the Whitney Museum in New York. # Shelley Niro holds a diploma in Performing Arts from Cambrian College, an Honours degree in Fine Art from the Ontario College of Art and Design and an MFA from the University of Western Ontario. Primarily known for her videos and photography work, Niro will participate in the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche arts festival in Toronto in September 2006. # Ho Tam's videos have been screened both nationally and internationally at festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival (2003) and Experimenta in Mumbai and New Delhi, India (2005). The artist holds a BA from McMaster University and an MFA from Bard College in New York. Tam currently teaches at the University of Victoria. Admission is free.
