UofW Professor promotes conference to encourage women and sport

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2006) – University of Windsor Kinesiology Professor Margery Holman will head a conference of top female athletes, researchers, and advocates September 28 and 29 at Queen’s Park to identify and share innovative approaches to helping young women benefit from participation in sport.

Sport and the Empowerment of Females, funded by the Ontario Women’s Directorate, will examine how positive lessons learned through sport can be applied by young women to relationships, work, goals, and daily living.

The conference will feature Jennifer Botterill of the National Women’s Hockey Team, as well University of Winnipeg Professor and former National Team athlete Sandra Kirby, and researcher and author Alan Berkowitz, who has written, Men’s Role in Creating a Culture of Equality in Sport.

"It is uplifting to see the number of situations where sport has a very positive influence on females," said Botterill. "I think that sport itself plays an important role in our society by developing women into confident, determined, and successful individuals. In terms of global perspectives, our country has an advanced view of women and roles that they can have in our society. This opportunity should be embraced, and in turn, help provide more exciting options for young women growing up."

Dr. Holman, a well-respected coach, teacher and University of Windsor administrator, is also one of the initiators of Girls in Motion, a local pilot project that has Grade 10 girls working collaboratively with their teachers to develop strategies to keep young women physically active. Holman’s work with local schools boards on the Girls in Motion project will be featured at the conference.

"I like to be out there in the community and working with groups to make the day-to-day sport experience better for young people," Holman said.
