Deliberations of Laurentian University's Board of Governors

Laurentian University's Board of Governors held its regular meeting on the campus today (September 23, 2005).

An update on the Faculty of Management was provided by Dr. Huguette Blanco, Acting Dean of this newly approved Faculty, and colleagues.

Laurentian president Dr. Judith Woodsworth presented a report on her recent activities, which included out-of-town "send-offs" for new students and their parents, and the successful official opening of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. Members were also informed that preliminary enrolment figures for Laurentian are very positive, in line with projections.

The Building and Planning Committee presented an update on the Campus Space Plan which identified a need for approximately 8,000 additional square meters of space and identified three potential scenarios to address the shortfall. Members were informed about plans to locate the new Bachelor of Education Building on the eastern portion of the campus between the Health Science Education Resource Centre and the B.F Avery Physical Education Building. The new Student Residence project is advancing and should have its roof in place by winter. It is also anticipated that a tender for site preparation for the new student recreation centre project will be ready for December 2005 or January 2006 and a tender for building construction for March 2006 with a completion date of mid July 2007.

The Finance Committee reported on various issues including financing for the construction of the new 223 bed student residence. The Board also approved the audited financial statements for the year ended April 30, 2005, as well as the appointment of the firm KPMG LLP as auditors for the year ending April 30, 2006.

The Board approved the recommendation made by Senate to reappoint Dr. Paul Colilli as Dean of the School of Graduate Studies for a five-year term.

Members were informed that the Lieutenant Governor renewed the terms of Sara Peltier and Julie DeSimone, and also named Robert Fontaine and Gerry Lougheed Jr. to the Board. Mariette Carrier-Fraser and Paul Baskomb were also elected to the Board. They will each serve a three-year term.
