Posted by Matt De Faria (Sport Information Assistant - Football) WATERLOO The defending Vanier Cup Champion Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-1) shut out the University of Western Mustangs (2-2) in the second half en route to a 34-18 victory over their bitter rivals. The game started off with intensity as the Western Mustangs came out and danced on the Hawk during their introduction. Laurier followed the Mustangs out of the tunnel and a war of words ensued at mid-field. The first quarter turned out to be low scoring with one point awardImage 1 from Hawks Roast 'Stangs for Homecominged to Western on a missed field goal kick from 24-yards. A second field-goal attempt was blocked by a Laurier special teams unit. In the second quarter some excellent field position allowed Western to jump out to a quick 15-0 lead on scores by Jesse Bellamy and D.J. Bennett. With the Hawks on their heels, Coach Ron VanMoerkerkes defensive unit stepped up as Luke Pinder forced Quarterback Mike Faulds to fumble on his own 6-yard line. The ensuing play led to a 6-yard Dante Luciani touchdown. The Golden Hawks success in the second quarter continued as the defense forced the Mustangs to go two-and-out. Partington started out on his own 35-yard line, and threw a bomb down the sidelines to Andy Baechler for a 41-yard reception. Four plays later, Partington hooked up with Baechler again, this time, in the Mustang end zone. A late Western field goal would close out the scoring in the first half, and put the Mustangs up 18-16. Coach Jeffries must haImage 2 from Hawks Roast 'Stangs for Homecomingve pumped up the defense during halftime after Western quarterback Michael Faulds was 14 of 17 for 187 yards in the first half. In the second half they swarmed Faulds constantly forcing one fumble and two interceptions. His counterpart, Jamie Partington was forced out of the game at the end of the first half after suffering an undisclosed leg injury. This opened the door for red-shirted freshman Ian Noble to take his first snap in Purple and Gold. He looked nervous after two incompletions, but came out in the second half and led the Hawks to victory. A Chris Mamo punt pinned the Mustangs deep in their own territory on the nine yard line. Quarterback Michael Faulds tried to force the ball over the middle, but was picked by freshman Jim Martyniuk. It was one of three interceptions for the young Golden Hawk setting a Laurier record for most in one game. It also put the Hawks in a great position to take the lead. The Hawk offense took no time, running 2 plays before an Andy Baechler 4-yard reverse gave the Hawks the lead for good. Offensive coordinator Ryan Pyear called an excellent game, keeping the Mustang defense guessing. While the running back trio of Ryan Lynch, Brodie Legein and Peter Quinney combined for 180 yards on the ground, running the clock and controlling the ball in the second half. The Golden Hawks sealed the deal after a 17 play possession that started on their own 21-yard line and ended with a 4-yard Ryan Lynch touchdown. The Hawks now look forward to playing their hometown rivals, the Waterloo Warriors (0-3) one week from today at University Stadium. Meanwhile, the Western Mustangs will try to recover next week as they host the undefeated Windsor Lancers (3-0). Scoring Summary UWO 1-17-0-0 = 18
