He has been awarded a University Professorship in the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Pannonia in Veszprem, Hungary. The Faculty of Information Technology forms a key component of the University's transformation from a technical university into a multi-disciplinary institution. A University Professor title is a rare honour granted to non-residents of Hungary, but, as in many countries, it is used to recognize the extraordinary contributions made by an individual. The appointment is also a way for Hungary to recognize the achievements of a native son. Terlaky was recently in Budapest to accept the appointment from Laszlo Solyom, President of Hungary, and Istvan Hiller, Minister of Culture and Education, at a ceremony held across from the Parliament Building. Terlaky is an internationally recognized scholar in optimization and mathematics. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Optimization. He is a project leader of MITACS (Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems), Chair of INFORMS' (Institute for Operations Research and Management Science) Optimization Society, and a member of INFORMS' Subdivision Council and funding Honorary Chair of EUROPT (European Working Group of Continuous Optimization). He is founding editor in chief of the journal Optimization and Engineering, and associate editor of several scientific journals. He is a Fellow of the Fields Institute. At McMaster, Terlaky led the establishment of the new School of Computational Engineering and Science, which launched in November 2005, and is now its director. Eighteen graduate students have already enrolled in Master's and PhD programs offered through the school. Terlaky joined McMaster in 1999 from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. In addition to his position in the Department of Computing and Software, he is an associate member of both the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Mathematics at McMaster. Terlaky holds a PhD and M.Sc. from Lorand Eotvos University in Budapest.
