Local high school students 'Reach for the Top' by attending BU

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University is proud to announce that two of the city's brightest high school students have chosen BU for their post secondary studies.

Jeff Hopkins and Matt Morrissette both graduated from Brandon's Vincent Massey High School in June 2006. The students were also the only grade 12 students (along with John Fung) who played on the Vincent Massey Reach for the Top quiz game team during the 2005-2006 season.

In Reach for the Top teams of four high school students team up against each other as representatives of their schools. During the games the students compete by answering questions, as a team, in several different categories. The Vincent Massey team overcame the team from Winnipeg's Silver Heights High School and the team from Winnipeg's St. John's Ravenscourt to become the first-ever provincial champs from Brandon. This led to a berth in the Reach for the Top nationals, which were taped for broadcast on select Canadian cable television stations.

"I helped coach these young men in their Reach for the Top practices," says Brian Mayes, also active with the Brandon University Foundation, and a member on leave of the BU Board of Governors, "and I am sure that Brandon U will benefit from attracting first-rate local students like these."

"I've always knows that Brandon University is one of the best small universities in the country," says BU President Dr. Louis Visentin, "and I'm glad that our local students are realizing that they have a gem right here at home."

Matt Morrissette is currently enrolled in the Faculty of Science and is planning on completing pre-professional studies at BU and then moving on to medical school with the goal of pursuing a career in pscychiatry. Eighteen year-old Morrissette is the 2006 recipient of The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame’s scholarship award. Now in its fifth year, the award is made possible through the generous support of Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life. The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) administers the CMHF scholarship. The selection committee considers each candidate’s letters of reference, awards, academic record, extra-curricular activities, interest in health sciences and a personal essay. The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life Scholarship provide $1,000 each year towards a four-year undergraduate degree in the health sciences at a Canadian university.

The decision of these outstanding students to attend BU is just one example of the University's ability to attract local high school achievers on the basis of our small class sizes, personalized learning environment, and location in one of the most beautiful cities in Western Canada!
