UNBF, UNB Saint John Host Memorial University Professor for MacNutt Lecture

September 25, 2006
UNB Fredericton News Release: D712
Brad Janes, Public Relations Officer (506) 458-7969

The topic is timely and perhaps controversial, but is sure to be an interesting subject for the W. Stewart MacNutt Memorial Lecture at both campuses of the University of New Brunswick.

James Hiller is the guest speaker at the popular lecture series which will be held Oct. 3 at UNBF and Oct. 4 at UNB Saint John. Dr. Hiller will appear at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102 of Sir Leonard Tilley Hall at UNBF and 5:30 p.m. in the Hazen Hall Lecture Theatre at UNB Saint John.

The professor of history at Newfoundland’s Memorial University will touch on current strands of Newfoundland nationalism and discontent with Confederation.

His topic is Robert Bond and the Pink, White and Green Flag: Some Reflections of Newfoundland as Colony, Dominion and Province.

Dr. Hiller has written extensively about the history of Newfoundland and Labrador. He edited the debates of the Newfoundland National Convention (1946-1948) and is co-author with UNBF’s Margaret Conrad of Atlantic Canada: A Concise History (2006). He is the editor of the journal Newfoundland and Labrador Studies and serves as the academic coordinator of the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage website (www.heritage.nf.ca).

Dr. Hiller’s present research includes the history of Newfoundland’s French Treaty Shore and Newfoundland politics of the early 20th century.

The annual W. Stewart MacNutt Memorial Lecture honours the late historian, professor and humanitarian for his many contributions to UNB and to the development of Atlantic Canadian history as a field of study.

For further information on the lecture, contact Linda Kealey at UNBF’s department of history at 506-458-7062 or lkealey@unb.ca or UNB Saint John’s Joy Roy in the department of history and politics at joyeroy@unbsj.ca or 506-648-5600.
