Women's conference benefits women's centre with $2,800 donation

Nanaimo area women are benefiting by $2,800 from an International Women’s Day conference held at Malaspina University-College March 8.

On September 20, profits from the conference were donated to the Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society.

Co-organizer Beverly Revin said the donation was possible thanks to generous support of the conference by the Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association, the Malaspina Faculty Association, CUPE, BCGEU, Malaspina University-College, and donors to a silent auction held throughout the day of the conference.

The Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society operates the Nanaimo Women’s Centre, which provides help and information for women in need. In addition to an information desk that helps women access services, the centre hosts ongoing workshops, including legal workshops donated by family lawyers Elizabeth Strain and Bonnie MacLaughlin.

A writing group and a discussion group also meet at the centre.

Key organizers of the conference were three Malaspina faculty members: Chair of Early Childhood Education & Care Beverly Revin, English Professor Jeannie Martin and Nursing Instructor Lynn Rollison. Martin is also president of the board of directors for the Nanaimo Women’s Resources Society. Additional volunteers included faculty members, students and Nanaimo residents.
