Of the eight awards presented nationally to young Canadians in post-secondary performing arts training programs, Paul’s award covers all orchestral instruments. Paul, a graduate of Charles P. Allen High School in Bedford, Nova Scotia, began violin studies at age seven, taking lessons from Karen Langille, first violinist with Symphony Nova Scotia, and later from Dalhousie professor Philippe Djokic. He has played with the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra since the age of 15 and this past summer was admitted as a scholarship student to the 2006 Summer String Session at Domain Forget Académie de Musique in Charlevoix, Quebec. Lynn Stodola, Chair of the Dalhousie University Music Department, considers Paul to be already an accomplished performer with exceptional promise for a brilliant career. The Dalhousie faculty members who adjudicated his entrance audition unanimously judged him to be "an outstanding applicant, a performer of tremendous promise and possessed of extraordinary musical sensitivity and technical skill." Professor Djokic remarks that, "Paul has a special artistic personality that really is evident as soon as he starts to play, full of energy, passion and love for the violin." Paul hopes that his time at Dalhousie will help him on his way to achieving goal of one day becoming a professional soloist. "You have to dream big because it could come true," he says. "I’m willing to work as hard as I can to get there. I know that this is what I’m meant to do." The Hnatyshyn Foundation is a private charity established by the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Canada’s twenty-fourth Governor General. Its programs are funded by donations from government, foundations, corporations and individuals. The grant winners were adjudicated anonymously by expert juries from among applicants nominated by educational and training institutions across Canada.
