Raymond Chang, Chairman of CI Financial and a member of Ryerson's Board of Governors has been named Chancellor of Ryerson University. "Mr. Chang is an outstanding business and community leader, and a passionate advocate for education and for Ryerson," said Sheldon Levy, President and Vice-Chancellor of Ryerson University. "As Chancellor, I know that Mr. Chang's outstanding leadership skills and ability to build partnerships locally, nationally and internationally will benefit not only our University, but also our communities, our city and our country. We are privileged to have Mr. Chang as our new Chancellor." The Chancellor, who is the ceremonial head of the university, is appointed for a three-year term. In addition to acting as an ambassador for Ryerson on the local, national and international levels, the Chancellor also presides at all convocations and confers university degrees. Mr. Chang is Ryerson's third Chancellor, succeeding John Craig Eaton, who was appointed to the post in 1999. "I am tremendously honoured to be named as the next Chancellor of Ryerson University. I strongly believe that education is the key to our success as individuals, as a city and as a country," said Mr. Chang. "As Chancellor, I look forward to continuing to work with the Ryerson community. I am proud to be an ambassador for the talent, energy and ideas of this wonderful university." Mr. Chang is the Chairman of the Board of CI Financial and one of Canada's most highly respected and successful business leaders. Mr. Chang acquired part ownership of CI Fund Management when it was a small investment firm. Under his stewardship, Mr. Chang and his partners have grown CI to Canada's third-largest investment fund company and second-largest publicly traded fund company. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of Ryerson University since 2001 and received an honorary doctorate from Ryerson in 2005. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is named in honour of Mr. Chang's generous support, and his deep belief in life-long learning. In addition to his support for Ryerson, Mr. Chang is an active member of the Board of Directors of the Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation. His generosity allowed for the creation of the Gladstone and Maisie Chang Chair in Teaching of Internal Medicine at the University Health Network. He also a Trustee of the Royal Ontario Museum. David Crombie, a teacher and administrator at Ryerson in the 1960s, was named the University's first chancellor in 1994 and served until 1999, when John Craig Eaton was appointed Chancellor. Mr. Eaton served two three-year terms as Chancellor of Ryerson University, stepping down at the end of the 2006 Academic year. Ryerson University's 24-member Board of Governors is comprised of the Chancellor, the President, 9 people appointed by the provincial government, two people appointed by the Board, 3 alumni elected by the alumni, 3 faculty elected by the faculty, 2 administrative staff members elected by the staff, and 3 student members elected by the students. The Board of Governors makes major administrative policy, staff and financial decisions including the appointment of the President and the appointment of senior University officials on the recommendation of the President.
