September 27, 2006 Source: : http://communications.uwo.ca/media_newsroom/story.html?listing_id=21920 Homecoming - Welcome to Western London, ON. - With some of the top names in Canadian media in attendance, Western is opening its campus to alumni and the greater London community this weekend as the University celebrates Homecoming 2006 - Friday, September 29 to Sunday, October 1. The parade, double-decker bus tours of campus and the annual homecoming football game highlight the programming this year. "Homecoming at Western is big, special and purple," says Anne Baxter, Western's Homecoming 2006 Chairperson. "It's become a part of the fabric of this city. Each year thousands of graduates return to London and Western's campus from all over the world to relive their student experience with old friends, former classmates and professors. It is truly a time to be purple and proud." A variety of events will take place across campus over the weekend including: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 Reception 5:30 p.m., Dinner 6:30 p.m. The 32nd annual Alumni Awards Dinner - The event, held at The Great Hall in Somerville House, is a celebration of the accomplishments of Western's Alumni Award winners including: The Alumni Award of Merit Recipients Dr. Ivan Smith Award: Dr. Peter Rechnitzer (BA'47, MD'48) Professional Achievement Award: Dr. Jim Silcox (MD'67, MEd'94, BA'06) Community Service Award: Ed Holder (BA'76) Young Alumni Award: MJ DeSousa (MClSc'96) Elfrida Berzins Award Recipients (Women's Athletic Alumnae) Judy Alaszkiewicz (BA'75, MA'80), Volleyball and Archery Michele Vesprini (BA'95, BEd'96), Basketball Sandra Anschuetz (BA'86, MA'89), Cross Country, Track & Field Sabine Nolke (BA'78, MA'81, LLB'85), Fencing 'W' Club Hall of Fame Inductees Sean Reade (HBA'96), Football Mike Barry (BA'80), Wrestling Jeff Lay (BA'93), Rowing Ronald Zanin (BA'69), Basketball and Track SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Five-kilometre Fun Run - Starting in the TD Waterhouse Stadium at 9:30 a.m., participants will follow a scenic route along the Thames River before looping back through campus. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Homecoming Parade - The route begins at Centennial Hall, travels up Richmond Street and arrives back at Western at noon. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Homecoming Hospitality Tent - "Homecoming Central" is located near TD Waterhouse Stadium and features face painting, games and activities for families and alumni. 10:30 a.m. CHRW/Western Alumni Panel Discussion - In celebration of CHRW's 25th anniversary, the volunteer fuelled radio station hosts a panel discussion in the McKellar Room in the UCC featuring such notables as Global TV Anchor Kevin Newman, Globe & Mail Sports Columnist Stephen Brunt and Sportsnet Broadcaster Rob Faulds. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Campus Tours - A double decker bus tour of Western is an excellent way to see firsthand why Western earned top honours in the parks and grounds category of the 2004 Communities in Bloom competition. 2 p.m. Football - The Western Mustangs face the Windsor Lancers at TD Waterhouse Stadium in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) action. 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Women's Panel - An inspirational discussion is scheduled at Brescia University College featuring four of its alumnae. Reception 6 p.m., Dinner 7 p.m. Golden Anniversary Dinner - An event honouring the class of 1956 and preceding years will be held at The Great Hall, Somerville House, which includes musical entertainment and a visit from Western's President, Paul Davenport. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Farewell Pancake Breakfast - Classmates say goodbye and make plans for next year's reunion at the FREE breakfast at the Homecoming Hospitality Tent, TD Waterhouse Stadium. 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. President's Reception - Graduates celebrating reunion years from 1931 through 1981 are invited to join their classmates for a garden reception hosted by President Paul Davenport and Josette Davenport at Gibbons Lodge, 1836 Richmond Street.
