September 27, 2006 Source: : http://www.smu.ca/newsreleases/2006/09-27-2006.html Ten Hut! Saint Mary’s University is now offering a unique course where students can learn more about the history of the military in Halifax. The course, Halifax and the Military Since 1749, will provide students with a unique insight into the relationship of the community of Halifax to Halifax’s military establishment over the last 250 years. The course came about as a result of the interest sparked by Parks Canada's Changing of the Guard events at Citadel Hill this summer. "From 1749 until 1945 the history of Halifax was a cycle of booms and busts, with great activity during times of war, and comparative inactivity in peacetime," says professor Don Chard, who teaches the course at the Spring Garden Road branch of the Halifax Public Library. This course is being offered via the University’s Division of Continuing Education. "After 1945 the city became less dependent on the military," he explains. "While merchants and others prospered from the presence of the military, there were often tensions between the military and civilian populations in the city. The real goal in this course is to have students explore the dynamics of the relationship, including social and economic aspects of the relationship." Students in the program will not only be engaged in Professor Chard’s lectures, but also will learn more about the history of the military via the book, Halifax, the First 250 Years, which is authored by Judith Fingard, Janet Guilford, and David Sutherland. In order to provide students with an even broader perspective on the history of the military, Professor Chard has scheduled in speakers, like Stephen Kimber and Judith Fingard.
