Dr. Milner will be presenting "The Many Faces of Memory," an informative look at the varying facets of human memory. Dr. Brenda Milner is a pioneer in the discipline of neuropsychology. She began her career at the Montreal Neurological Institute in 1950 and has worked extensively with patients who have neurological disorders, such as brain tumours or epilepsy. Some of her best-known research focused on studying patients before and after brain surgery and, as a result of her studies, we have a better understanding of the different memory systems in the brain. Additionally, her research changed how patients are evaluated before surgery and new surgical techniques have been developed to minimize postoperative problems with cognitive functioning, memory, and language. Dr. Milner's contribution to understanding memory, language function, and the specialization of specific brain areas has led to potential therapies for debilitating conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and stroke. Recently, Dr. Milner's research has focused on using brain imaging to study how bilingual and unilingual speakers process language. She has received many awards for her work, and, in 1997, Canada recognized her contributions to science by electing her to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. The Royal Society of Canada Governor General Lecture Series was created to inform Canadians on recent advances in research and to serve as a platform to discuss relevant national policy issues. Inaugurated in May 2005, lectures are given in four locations across Canada annually. Sponsors for the Governor General Lecture Series are Irving Oil Limited, BMO Financial Group and RBC Financial Group. The Royal Society of Canada is a renowned national academy founded in 1882. The Royal Society brings together distinguished scientists, researchers and scholars in Canada. Its primary objective is to promote learning and research in the arts, natural and social sciences, and the humanities. Anyone interested in attending the free public lecture can RSVP to Patty O'Brien at pobrien@unbsj.ca - 30 -
