A Pocket Companion to the Owens Art Gallery: A little guide for kids by kids, to be launched Sept. 30

SACKVILLE, NB — On Saturday, September 30 the Owens Art Gallery will launch A Pocket Companion to the Owens Art Gallery: A little guide for kids by kids. This publication is the result of a collaboration between the Owens Art Gallery and a grade four class at Port Elgin Regional School, in Port Elgin, NB. Please join us and the students of Mrs. Demers’ grade four class to celebrate the launch, which will take place at 2 p.m. at the Owens Art Gallery.

Together we explored the Owens and learned about its history and collection. We visited the vaults where paintings are stored and the fine art conservation laboratory where damaged artworks are repaired. We also examined the architecture of the building and how the Owens has changed since it first opened in 1895. We asked many questions, discussed what we saw, reflected through journal writing and focused our looking through sketching and photography. The guide, which will be a resource for other young visitors to the Gallery, features the photographs, drawings and journal entries done by the Port Elgin students during the six visits they made to the Owens in the spring of 2006.

The Port Elgin project is the first in an initiative to work with young audiences to produce interpretive resources for other young visitors. Through multiple visit projects with local schools such as Port Elgin, we aim to work with students and teachers in-depth, enabling students to be become "experts" who are confident in sharing their learning with others. It is also hoped that the experience will foster an on-going enthusiasm for the visual arts and the development of life-long museum visitors. A Pocket Companion to the Owens Art Gallery brings the perspective and voices of young visitors into the Gallery and provides an important opportunity for peer interpretation.
