University and community service to be recognized at 2005 Clark Awards

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2005) – A local mould maker who has lent his expertise to a number of automotive industry related initiatives in the Windsor area is one of five outstanding community and University of Windsor supporters who will be honoured with the 2005 Clark Award. This year's winners will receive their awards during a dinner in their honour, Thursday, October 6, 6:30 p.m. in Ambassador Auditorium, on the second floor of the University's CAW Student Centre.

Clark Awards have been presented annually since 1994. Named in honour of the late Charles J. Clark Sr., Q.C., former Chancellor of the University of Windsor, the award recognizes outstanding personal service of both alumni volunteers and friends of the university who have made significant commitments in time, energy and expertise, by serving on University of Windsor boards, committees or campaigns; and/or have worked extensively to increase the profile and reputation of the University.

The recipients for 2005 are:

! Edward Helmut Bernard, an automotive industry leader who served on the Advisory Council of the University's Centre for Automotive Research & Education.

! Kenneth M. Alexander, a University of Windsor alumnus specializing in Human Rights and employment law, has been an active member of the Alumni Association.

! Rev. Jean Elizabeth Sonnenfeld, a University of Windsor alumnus and social justice advocate who was actively involved in Amnesty International during its early days in Canada.

! Dr. Michael Zin, a University of Windsor alumnus and former Faculty of Business dean who has served as president of the Alumni Association, Goodwill Industries, the Cerebral Palsy Association and the Rotary Club of Windsor.

! Phyllis Margaret Zin, is a long-time supporter of the University of Windsor and a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She spent 20 years volunteering at Huron Lodge and was instrumental in starting Amherstburg's Music By the River program.

Edward Bernard

Edward Bernard is president of Bernard Mould and Comprehensive Plastic Technologies (CPT). He served on the Advisory Council of the University's Centre for Automotive Research & Education and has been a guest lecturer on business ethics at the University of Windsor's Odette School of Business. He has served as president of both the Windsor and Canadian Association of Mould Makers and has been Chair of the Canadian Machine Tool Die Mould Federation since 2004. Bernard has served as Chair of Initiatives for Automotive Innovation and Chair of both the Government Relations Committee and Scientific Research & Experimental Development for CAMM. He has been product designer, coordinator, artist and logistics advisor to CarTunes on Parade since 2003 and has served as Co-chair of the International Ambassadors Tours for Windsor and the surrounding area since 2003. He is married to Paula Bernard and is the father of University of Windsor MBA student Naomi Bernard.

Kenneth Alexander

Kenneth Alexander is a lawyer specializing in human rights, labour, employment and administrative law. He has been a member of the University of Windsor Alumni Association since 1992 and has served on the University of Windsor Senate and Board of Governors. Alexander was a member of the Laskin National Moot Team for the University of Windsor; was vice-president of the Student Law Society and was a caseworker for Community Legal Aid.. Upon graduation from the University of Windsor's Faculty of Law Alexander was awarded the John Whiteside Award for contributions to his faculty.

Rev. Jean Elizabeth Sonnenfeld

Rev. Jean Elizabeth Sonnenfeld has a Masters degree in Religious Studies from the University of Windsor and was a sessional instructor in that department for many years. She also taught English as a Second Language and Religious Studies at the university and college level. During the years she spent at home raising a family, Sonnenfeld was active in the early days of the Amnesty International movement and volunteered with the Windsor Coalition for Development, an organization dedicated to creating affordable housing in the Windsor area. She has been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and has been active in the Faculty Women's Club and the Canadian Federation of University Women. She was married to the late Dr. Peter Sonnenfeld, founder and former Head of the University of Windsor's Geology Department, is a mother of two and grandmother of one and has established school scholarships in their names.

Dr. Michael Zin

Dr. Michael Zin is a former Dean of the University of Windsor's Faculty of Business and is the coauthor of Canada's most widely used accounting textbook, Fundamental Accounting Principles, which has sold nearly two million copies. He has been president of the University of Windsor Alumni Association where he received the Windsor Alumni Association Award. He served as president of Goodwill Industries; the Cerebral Palsy Association; and the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918). He has served on the boards of a number of organizations including the Advisory Board of St. Clair College, the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants and Grace Hospital.

Phyllis Margaret Zin

Phyllis Zin was a public school teacher at McDonald College in Montreal and later attended the University of Windsor, taking classes in law and business in order to serve as treasurer of her father's company, Viking Plumbing. She has been involved as a university and community supporter in a number of capacities including the Canadian Cancer Society; the Windsor Symphony Orchestra; Beta Sigma Phi Sorority; Huron Lodge; Faculty Wives; and was instrumental in founding and supporting Amherstburg's Music By the River program.
