Segal, Dr. Sterling Evans, and Dr. William Shaffir. The series kicks off on Monday, September 12 at 7:00 pm with Dr. Gwynne Dyer's "Back to the Great Game." One of Canada's most prominent journalists, Dr. Dyer will speak about how "the United States under the present administration is committed to sidelining the United Nations, undermining international law, and remilitarizing the planet. We are in trouble, but not because of terrorism" in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, located in Brandon University's Queen Elizabeth II building, located on 20th Street near Princess. On Thursday, September 15 at 7:00 pm, Dr. Alan F. Segal, Professor of Religion and Ingebord Rennert Professor of Jewish Studies at Barnard College (affiliated with Columbia University) in New York, will give a talk titled "Life After Death" that illuminates the many different ways ancient civilizations grappled with the question of what exactly happens to us after we die. In this exploration of how Western civilizations have defined the afterlife, Alan Segal weaves together biblical and literary scholarship, sociology, history, and philosophy. Dr. Segal will be speaking in the Rowe Theatre (Room 209 of the Brandon University Education Building, located on 18th Street at Princess Avenue.) Thanks to The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba for their generous sponsorship of Dr. Segal's talk. Dr. Sterling Evans, Canada Research Chair in History at BU and a specialist in the history of modern Latin America with emphases on Mexico, Central America, Borderlands, and environmental history, will give a talk on Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 pm based on his book Bound in Twine: The History and Ecology of the Henequen-Wheat Complex for Mexico and the American and Canadian Plains. Dr. Evans's presentation will also take place in the Rowe Theatre (location above). On Thursday, November 3 at 7:00 pm, Brandon University welcomes Dr. William Shaffir, who will be speaking on the Riot at Christie Pits. On August 16, 1933, a baseball game was played during an amateur tournament at Christie Pits in Toronto, with one team made up largely of Jewish players. At the end of the game, a group of Nazi sympathizers unfurled a large swastika flag. A riot erupted pitting Jews and Italians against Anglo-Canadians that lasted for hours. Dr. Shaffir's talk provides an intriguing analysis of these events. Dr. Shaffir's presentation will also take place in the Rowe Theatre (location above). Thanks to The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba for their generous sponsorship of Dr. Shaffir's talk. All of the presentations in the Brandon University Faculty of Arts Liberal Arts Speakers are open to the public, and admission is free.
