September 5, 2006 Source: : http://www.acadiau.ca/whatsnew/newsrelease/2006/vp_academic_5sep.html Acadia names Dr. George Iwama Acting Vice-President Academic (Wolfville, NS) - Acadia University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb, today announced that Dr. George Iwama will become Acadia’s Acting Vice-President Academic beginning October 1, 2006. Dr. Iwama, Acadia’s Dean of Science, replaces Dr. Ralph Nilson, who will leave Acadia at the end of December to become President of Malaspina University College in Nanaimo, BC. Dr. Iwama will be assisted in his role by Acadia’s Dean of Professional Studies, Dr. William McLeod and Dean of Arts, Dr. Bob Perrins. Dr. McLeod will assist with budgeting and financial matters, while Dr. Perrins will assume responsibility for the new Learning Commons and for implementing Acadia’s Academic Strategic Plan. Dr. Perrins will also be asked to bring forward recommendations regarding Acadia’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies. "A mid-year transition is always difficult, but we are fortunate to have academic Deans with administrative and strategic strengths who together can provide Acadia with the academic leadership it requires," said Dr. Dinter-Gottlieb. "I know Dr. Iwama will maintain the focus we have on celebrating and promoting the academic achievements of our highly respected faculty and talented students. The support he will receive from Drs. McLeod and Perrins will ensure the momentum behind several important academic initiatives will be maintained." Prior to his departure at the end of the year, Dr. Nilson will complete his work on the implementation phase of the Academic Strategic Plan. He will also be working on an initiative that will leverage Acadia’s considerable capacity for undergraduate research, a unique part of the University’s academic program. "The search for Acadia’s next Vice-President Academic will begin immediately," said Dr. Dinter-Gottlieb. "There are a number of exciting challenges ahead of us, and we will want to find a new Vice-President who will be ready in time for the beginning of the next academic year."
