The festivities begin with the official opening ceremony on the mezzanine level of the new campus on Friday, September 8 at 10 a.m. SFU President Michael Stevenson, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and others will take part in the ceremony. Campus tours and a public lecture by Central City architect Bing Thom will follow. More activities are planned for Saturday, September 9, including self-guided and student-conducted campus tours, an academic program and research showcase and entertainment on the mezzanine and in the plaza in front of Central City. The Saturday festivities begin with a Philosopher’s Café at 10:30 a.m., followed by a public open house from 12 to 4 p.m. More information is available at www.surrey.sfu.ca/opening or by calling 778-782-7500. "We’re inviting all our neighbours in Surrey, the Fraser Valley and beyond to join us in this celebration," says Stevenson. "SFU’s Surrey campus is the community’s university, and we welcome the community as a true partner." SFU Surrey Executive Director Joanne Curry says the new campus will help the university strengthen its community ties. "We have a unique opportunity to build deeper relations with the community as we gain more resources," she says." I see SFU Surrey as an open, accessible university, connected with the citizens, and relevant to the community." The new campus occupies 21,500 square metres in the award-winning Central City building at 102 Avenue and King George Highway in north Surrey, adjacent to the Surrey Central SkyTrain station. SFU Surrey offers degree programs in arts and social sciences, business administration, computing science, education, engineering, interactive arts and technology and science as well as a variety of continuing studies programs and public lectures and events. -30-
