SURF's Up! - Mount A students organize third annual research fair, Sept. 8

SACKVILLE, NB - Get ready to ride the waves of knowledge at Mount Allison this fall. The third annual Science Undergraduate Research Fair (SURF) will take place Thursday, September 8 beginning at 4 p.m. in the Wu Centre, located in the Dunn Building, Mount Allison University campus.

SURF is a student-organized event that allows summer research students at Mount A the opportunity to present their research to their peers and professors in the form of an oral or poster presentation. Organizing committee chair and SURF participant John Thaler, a fourth-year biology major from New Hamburg, ON adds, "This is a unique experience for the close-knit group of summer research students to formally present their accomplishments from the summer in front of their peers and their professors. It is also a great chance for first-year and second-year students to hear about research opportunities at Mount Allison and identify subjects of interest, which will ultimately help them make decisions regarding courses and future careers."

This is the third year for SURF at Mount A and it has proved to be a popular event on campus. As one participant from 2003 says, "It (SURF) has given me good practice for further types of presentations and has made me confident in my speaking skills. It's an experience I wouldn't have had anywhere else." SURF organizers would like to thank the student participants, chemistry professor, Dr. Stacey Wetmore, Dr. Margaret Beattie, Mount Allison's dean of science, the SURF judges, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for their support of the event.

The research fair will take place on Thursday, September 8 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The oral presentations will be given in the Wu Centre (Dunn 113) and the poster presentations will be displayed on first floor of the Dunn building. During the poster presentations there will also be a BBQ dinner for participants, audience members, and judges. There are currently 12 oral presentations and 15 poster presentations, with topics ranging from exercise stress in fish to experimental nuclear physics. Each presentation (both oral and poster) will be evaluated by a panel of three judges and monetary prizes will be given for the top two presentations in each category.
