David Miller, Laurel Broten and June Callwood to pitch in at Outreach 2006

Dignitaries to join U of T community in support of civic engagement and public service
Sep 6/06
by Sonnet L’Abbé (about) (email)

Mayor David Miller and Ontario minister of environment Laurel Broten will help clean up parkland, and journalist and social activist June Callwood will deliver the keynote speech on Saturday, Sept. 9 at U of T’s inaugural oUTreach2006: Putting U in the Community. Dignitaries will join an anticipated 2,000 students, staff and faculty from the University of Toronto as they head into the community to lend a hand and discover how academic learning supports larger principles of civic engagement and public service.

Participants will rally on campus before heading out to agencies, community centres and environmental sites. They will assist with a Special Olympics soccer tournament, remove garbage from river banks, help set up dragon boat races, organize reading circles for non-English speaking children and offer support to hundreds of Toronto-area communities.

After a day of service work, participants will meet with team and agency leaders to talk about their volunteer experience, highlighting the social issues that affect their volunteer sites and how their work responded to these issues. The day is modelled after Community Plunge Day (formerly National Gandhi Day of Service) events that involved 200 U of T students and highlighted ideals of compassion, selflessness and unity.

Students and agency representatives are available for interviews. Visit www.students.utoronto.ca/oUTreach.htm for more information.
