Survivor Africa's Ethan Zohn To Speak at Carleton U. Orientation Closing Ceremonies

Survivor Africa's Ethan Zohn To Speak at Carleton U. Orientation Closing Ceremonies
September 09, 2005

Event:
Ethan Zohn, the winner of Survivor Africa, is the guest speaker at Carleton University's Orientation Closing Ceremonies. He will talk about "Character: The Ultimate Survival Tool". The event was organized by Carleton's new First Year Experience Office (FYEO).

When:
6:30 p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2005

Where:
Bell Canada Theatre, Minto Building, Carleton University

Background:
Zohn was recently awarded the honour of "best new speaker of the year" by Campus Activities Magazine. He founded Grassroot Soccer, an organization that strives to mobilize the global soccer community in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Zohn will speak about how he turned his Survivor winnings and notoriety into making a difference in the community and the world. He will examine the issue of character, and put it into terms that students can relate to, using personal stories from Survivor as well as other times in his life. Zohn says that, as in life, Survivor is really all about community. "When you make yourself a valuable and contributing member of the community, and allow people to depend on you, they are always interested in keeping you around and in helping you in return."

Carleton's new First Year Experience Office organized this event as part of a comprehensive Orientation program for new first year students. FYEO acts as a central resource centre for new students by providing services and resources to help them make a successful transition to university as well as providing resources and assistance for faculty and staff involved in the teaching and programming of these students. The Office has a number of other new initiatives planned for the future to enhance the student experience and to ensure they have the support they need throughout their first year.
