69 uOttawa researchers receive NSERC funding worth $9.4 million

OTTAWA, September 8, 2006 — Funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council will allow 69 University of Ottawa researchers to pursue research projects in a wide range of fields including climate change, hearing, technology, robotics, cold exposure, virtual reality, mathematical ecology, data privacy and genomics.

University of Ottawa researchers received a total of $9.4 million in the competition. Here are some of the funded projects:

Stan Matwin (School of Information Technology and Engineering)
In light of growing public concern about personal data collected by both the private and public sectors, Stan Matwin is finding ways to allow users to better protect their personal information.

Balbhir Dhillon (Department of Mechanical Engineering)
Balbir Dhillon is working on analyzing the reliability of 21st century technology in order to minimize accidents and errors. The applications range from challenging ventures like space missions or brain surgery, as well as more mundane activities like running trains on time or delivering electricity to our homes around the clock.

Danielle Fortin (Department of Earth Sciences)
Danielle Fortin is studying bacteria in a geological context, more specifically in the extreme environment provided by the mine tailings of Timmins, Ontario. Through her research, she is discovering the importance of bacteria in the environment as well as their level of activity in the oxidation process.

Patrick Walsh (Department of Biology)
Patrick Walsh is working on understanding the mechanisms by which different species of aquatic organisms adapt to changes in their environment. He also uses fish models to study human diseases of the liver and the brain.

University of Ottawa professors also received 21 Research Tools and Instruments grants and 1 Major Facilities Access Grants, for a total of $1.4 million.

Professors dedicate a large portion of their NSERC funding to training new Canadian researchers at all stages of their education. NSERC also provided a total of $4.3 million for scholarships to 204 students.
