Studying Aerospace Engineering in Canada

Students studying aerospace engineering start with a solid background in mathematics, materials science, and mechanical engineering. They learn about which materials aircraft and spacecraft need to be built with, and learn about new materials being designed with very specific properties related to aerospace. Related to materials science, students also learn about solid mechanics, which deals with the stress and strain such vehicles and their components undergo.

Students also study subjects such as fluid mechanics (airflow over wings, wind tunnel usage), propulsion methods (internal combustion engines, turbines, chemical propellants, and newer techniques such as ion propulsion), avionics (programming of computer systems), control engineering (making sure craft behave in a stable manner), and noise control. They also do practical exercises such as flight tests or wind tunnel experiments, whereby they get to empirically test their theoretical models in the real world.

Aerospace engineering students also learn how to integrate all these components into a working vehicle and determine limitations such as material fatigue over time, temperature control, and power system requirements.
