Studying Aquaculture and Aquatic in Canada

Students learn the theory and practical applications of aquatic farming. This includes studies in water properties, nutrient cycles, pollutants, and marine chemistry. Since the majority of aquaculture operations are fish farms, fish biology and their life cycles are extensively studied. This includes fish health and fish ecology. Courses are also available in shellfish production.

A strong practical component often accompanies the theoretical program. Many schools have wet-lab facilities where students can learn how to handle many of the tasks and processes involved in the cultivation and care of aquatic life. In addition to raising the eggs in a hatchery operation, students learn how to feed the stock, prepare algal cultures, and maintain an optimal environment. They collect and record growth, production, and water quality data, and check stock for disease and treat them when necessary. They also learn about the harvesting of fish for processing or for release into the wild.
