Audiology and Speech Sciences Research Areas and Disciplines

A lot of research in audiology is towards preventing or managing hearing loss in children. Researchers are assessing the developmental changes in children's ability to process complex sounds, central auditory processing disorders, and the effects of noise on academic skills and achievement. They are developing methods to evaluate children's abilities to detect, discriminate, and classify complex sounds. These studies are conducted in both normally developing children and children with suspected auditory processing disorders or attention deficit disorders. Other studies are addressing the effects of noise on measures of academic achievement and learning.

The effects of aging on hearing is also being studied. Scientists are examining the changes in speech reception and word recognition across the adult life span. As well, they are studying the effects of noise on hearing, with specific studies in leisure noise exposure in youth (loud music, etc) and work-related noise exposure (eg. at construction sites).

Other researchers are working to improve clinical practice. These studies are working to develop and implement new intervention methods such as improved electroacoustic verification procedures, public perception of hearing loss, and education strategies to induce the public to get tested on a regular basis. As well, new technologies are always being integrated into existing audiology technology, such as the development of cochlear surgery and the miniaturization of batteries for implants. Researchers are also working to develop devices that can focus on a specific range of frequencies (such as a companion's voice), with the eventual design of a control device that could help mute outside sounds (eg. traffic, other voices, etc) and make conversations in a noisy room easier to understand.
