Behavioural Sciences Research Areas and Disciplines

BME research revolves around 2 main themes: the creation or improvement of medical devices and implants, and the engineering of living tissue.

Medical device research is common in hospitals, where things such as pacemakers, artificial hearts, ventilators, and dialysis machines are designed and improved. There is also research into the creation of lightweight and inert materials that go into devices that are implanted in bodies, so as to decrease the issues of rejection and chemical reactions.

One of the goals of tissue engineering is the creation of artificial organs for patients that need organ transplants. Research into creating such organs is currently underway, such as the development of bone from stem cells. Bioartificial organs (both synthetic and organic components) are also being created to serve as a bridge while the problems with completely organic organs are worked out.

Biomedical engineering technologies are also used to improve crop yields, the manufacturing of human insulin, and the creation of experimental animals such as oncomice for cancer research.
