Studying Biochemistry in Canada
Students studying biochemistry at the undergraduate level study basic chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Introductory courses in laboratory techniques are a must for more advanced courses. Advanced courses include membrane biochemistry, molecular biology of DNA and RNA, bioinformatics, genetics. Most students wanting to further their education at the graduate level will take on a directed study course, or honors or co-op project, in their final year.
At the graduate level, courses are more advanced still. Topics like advanced molecular biology techniques and protein analysis are restricted to upper-level students. Actual laboratory techniques are honed at the graduate level. Seminars in recent advances in biochemistry and molecular biology are offered several times a semester at most schools. As part of their graduate-level training, students are expected to participate in these seminars, and give several of their own over the course of their own research.
