Studying Biodiversity in Canada

Students begin with basic introductory biology courses where they learn the fundamentals such as physiology, ecology, and evolution. Students also take courses in genetics, cell, and molecular biology, in order to examine biodiversity at the genetic level.

Diversity courses are designed to teach about the variety of life. Students learn about plant diversity, animal diversity, and microbial diversity, and the linkages amongst them. Ecology aspects include global, regional, and population ecology, and the relationships between genetics and ecology.

Biodiversity courses are supplemented by studies in how humans have affected diversity. Students learn about past mass extinctions and their possible causes, and about present and future extinctions.

Field courses are an integral part of biodiversity programs, where students get to apply their theoretical knowledge to hands-on studies. Various ecosystems are examined, such as marine, freshwater, plains, forests, and polar regions, and the biodiversity examined in each.
