Bioresource Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

Research in bioresource engineering is in many fields. With regards to farm machinery, there is development into the continued automation of such machinery, and the use of robotics for daily uses. Machine vision is an emerging technology, where sensors are used to detect the perimeter of a field or barn. This allows that machine to do its work (eg. automated tilling) while remaining within it's designated parameters.

Wastewater irrigation and management is another area of research. New developments in redirecting such wastewater away from environmentally sensitive areas are underway. There is also research into using microbes to eliminate harmful chemicals and pollutants from wastewater so that water can be either re-used, or flushed to the environment without harm. Related to wastewater management is stormwater management, where elevated levels of uncontaminated water can come into contact with contaminated water. Technologies are being developed to eliminate or mitigate this mixing during storms, such as the development of better drainage systems in fields, or the building of dykes or canals in agricultural regions.

Animal management is another field where bioresource engineering is involved. Research into building more efficient but humane housing for food animals is underway, with investigations into the benefits of outdoor access, the impacts of crowding, disease management, and manure management. These people often work in collaboration with microbiologists and ethicists to create better living conditions for food animals.

With public perception being of increasing importance to resource industries, bioresource engineers are working to develop more environmentally friendly ways of acquiring resources for the mining, forestry, and petroleum industries. This includes investigations into developing mining practices that minimally impact the surrounding environment, reforestation techniques, reclamation of previously-ravaged land, and managing pollution.
